No need to send me any more suggestions -- the solution to this was to download 
and compile an updated Ethernet driver kernel module. Thank you.

The old 8139too driver was not allowing the card to autosense full or 
half-duplex values and 10 / 100 Mbit speeds, and forcing your own speed and 
duplex is not allowed on my network.
