Well it seems that if this was just a timeout issue, it would not hang for
12+hr at a time?? It seems to hang indefinitely until I kill the process.

You can see that this process hung, and nothing happened until I killed the
process. Then it started working again. Again, I am sure this was caused
by my connection having a outage.
Is this a bug in fetchmail that it hangs when the network connection dropes
out from under it??
If fetchmail can't connect it doesn't give up immediately, there are
timeouts involved (as there are with most network based programs).
If you're really that concerned you could always drop the timeouts (see the
man page). Just keep in mind that if you do so then when your remote server
is running slowly you may not get your email.
