Exactly so, which is why I found the requirement in RFC 2821 which says
you MUST correct that particular error so strange.

I honestly think it would be better for gateway implementors simply to
ignore that requirement. There is no way to enforce it anyway. But I would
still be curious to hear what such implementors actually currently do.
