support people who access the mailbox using mutt. They'd all need write
access to the mailbox in order to update flags & delete messages. If
they all belong to the same group that has write access to support's

(I'm not saying there won't be problems with that setup, only that one
can come up with a reason to break almost any "standard" if one tries
hard enough. ;)
Hell, some mail servers won't deliver mail if the mailbox has incorrect
permissions. Qmail comes to mind.
Presumably he's using procmail to deliver to local mailboxes. ;-)
