I've been using xslt-process on NTEmacs. The package contains both Xalan
and Saxon jars, and you can switch between the two processors. I've been
using the latest version successfully with jdk1.4.
Like any Emacs module, if you are familiar with Emacs it's cool, otherwise
it's probably painful.
