On the other hand, the replacement of result-tree-fragments with plain-ol'
node sets in XSLT 2.0 will mean that many of the kinds of things that now
require two passes, will be possible in one, without pipelining. Not that
this will always be a good idea.

No, there's no plan to do this. The thinking is that the control of a
sequence of XML-related operations should be controlled by some kind of
pipeline processor, using a language external to XSLT.
