My stylesheet is starting with
xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl=http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-xsl
I did try to use - xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform
but it was also giving me syntax errors.
I am not sure how to check the version of XSL processor being used in my
environment. I am trying to subscribe my gmail id to this forum so that I can
paste the whole code in the email.

you are not by any chance using the "xsl" in msxml2 /ie5 are you? That
is only distantly related to XSLt and has been deprecated by microsoft
for nearly a decade.
Your stylesheet start with
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform";
(or version="2.0" if you have an XSLT 2 processor)
