You could supplement LAMP by Caucho Resin (Java App Server),
use their Quercus PHP engine and than tap from Quercus/PHP
into Saxon/Java.
Didn't try it either, but It Should Just Work (TM).
A lot of people in the consumer sector use LAMP because that's what the
hosting companies offer. Sadly, many don't offer Java because it's too
difficult to isolate different services sharing the same platform.
