His business was withGalliard, who mattered a great deal. There were times when the narrativelagged, and times when it came fast and confusedly.
He promptly got off and again fell on his face. I heardthat in the fall when we were comin in. He was too weary in body and sick in soul.
Ive seen it happen before, happen to tougher stocks than the Hares.
Now there seemed to be a way ofsalvation. Jonnnys contemptuous eyes became suddenly gentle.
They dont make muchfuss over a reunion, though its three weeks since they parted.
He had been facing death, waiting stoically onits coming. Were too high up here for thewinter hunting, and itll be worse when the big snows come inFebruary.
And up here, on the same continent, we dontknow one thing about it.
Its a caribous shoulder-blade, and its got to be an old buckwith a special head of horns. He was clinging to Leithen through fear, clinging like a drowningman to a log. Lew and Johnny wanted to go to the Hares assistance.
He was ableto swallow some food, and when they started again he insisted onwalking with Galliard.
He remembered, too, what Galliard had said about the summons towar.
I was for a time the British Attorney-General. As a generalthing they fish all summer and dry their catch for the winter.
Im afraid, black afraid ofthis damned country. Father Duplessis says theres trouble in the Hares camp, hesaid.
Father Duplessis has the same story, Leithen said. A few days earlier one of thecamp kettles was found to be leaking.
His eyes turned to Galliard, who was looking puzzled. A month ago you couldnt havemade that first mile. It switched Leithens mind back to aforgotten world which had no longer any meaning.
The one thing he was resolved should not happen was a slowdecline in their affection.
For you and me that wouldve meant a pretty hard winters work. Yet at anymoment the fire might kindle again in him. Leithen brooded over that mysterious thing, the North. He had clearlyexpected argument, perhaps contradiction, but Leithen had noimpulse to argue.
He had another trouble, the worst of all. The hillside was noisy with runningwater and the drip of thawing spruces. By the time the thaw-out comes youllbe the toughest of the bunch.
