[fetchmail]Lost email?

Hello,

  A coworker ran fetchmail this morning on a basic fetchmail --> sendmail --> 
procmail setup but got a number of socket errors on the local sendmail port 
since the daemon was down.

  After restarting sendmail, the old mail was not retrieved and appears to be 
unavailable.  Is it lost forever?  Shouldn't fetchmail have avoided deleting it 
from the server when it got a socket error on the local SMTP port?

  Is there somewhere on his box the email could still be?
