Yes, it is. I've added a note to the FAQ about this failure mode.
Unfortunately, the exchange admins aren't interested in figuring out how
to get a "non-standard" mail client working. I'd be happy to try to debug
fetchmail.
Sending me an Exchange 2000 greeting line would be a good start.
