I don't know whether there's a syntax error in my /root/.fetchmailrc or
it's given up because it can't resolve the IP address of one of the
hosts it's supposed to check though I suspect the former as it's only a
little while since it was working AND I have changed the configuration
file.
I was already running 'fetchmail -v -v' because of other problems. Here
are the final messages:

Aug 6 15:31:00 dugite fetchmail[30197]: restarting fetchmail
(/root/.fetchmailrc changed).
It's now 16:15 as I write.
(tries to restart it).
There IS a syntax error; it SHOULD be noted somewhere (and preferably
continue working with the previous configuration).
Okay, no I've fixed the syntax I can't restart it because it cannot
resolve one of the hosts it's to poll. This is not an error and should
not prevent it from starting (though the report to stderr is a good
idea).
