[fetchmail]Can't open socket in 5.7 or 5.9

I would like to upgrade fetchmail.  I am running 5.5.0.

When I use either 5.7 or 5.9 fetchmail cannot open a socket (error 2)

The only reference to this in the FAQ that I found related to ppp, but I am not 
using dial-up.

I installed binaries for my distro, RedHat 7.1

Any ideas?  
I thought the configuration might have changed so I used fetchmailconf 5.9, but 
it made no
difference.
