note: this happens w/ every message, not just the mplayer mailing list
ones.
Check your /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf.
As a workaround, try to run fetchmail with
--mda "/usr/sbin/sendmail -i -oem -f %F %T"
