[fetchmail] ssl/sslproto keyword usage in fetchmailrc?

What is the proper usage of the ssl or sslproto keyword in fetchmailrc?

poll mail.host.com
        proto imap
        user "correia"
        password "xxxx"

adding just a bare ssl or sslproto keyword to the config results in 
parse errors.
