fetchmail.

I can pass it to my sendmail-like SMTP wrapper, that sends directly
out via SMTP, and have it pass to the firstclass server, eh?  Any
thoughts on how to do that?

www.procmail.org has tons of documentation, it'd be kind if you could
check that first and if you can't find the desired information, ask the
procmail mailing list if appropriate or try Usenet.
