RE: [fetchmail] Fetchmail Hanging

Here is another example from the logs.

/var/log/mail/info
....snip.....
Jun 25 11:02:00 fetchmail[14000]: awakened at Wed Jun 25 11:02:00 2003
Jun 25 11:03:03 fetchmail[14000]: timeout after 60 seconds waiting to
connect to server mail.my.domain.
Jun 25 11:03:03 fetchmail[14000]: Query status=2 (SOCKET)
Jun 25 13:50:36 fetchmail[14000]: terminated with signal 15
Jun 25 13:52:00 fetchmail[25049]: starting fetchmail 6.2.1 daemon
Jun 25 13:52:11 fetchmail[25049]: 27 messages for mail(_at_)my(_dot_)domain at
mail.my.domain (2497368 octets).
....snip....

/var/log/mail/errors
....snip.....
Jun 25 11:03:03 fetchmail[14000]: socket error while fetching from
mail.my.domain
....snip.....

You can see that this process hung, and nothing happened until I killed the
process. Then it started working again. Again, I am sure this was caused
by my connection having a outage.

Is this a bug in fetchmail that it hangs when the network connection dropes
out from under it??

If fetchmail can't connect it doesn't give up immediately, there are timeouts involved (as there are with most network based programs).

If you're really that concerned you could always drop the timeouts (see the man page). Just keep in mind that if you do so then when your remote server is running slowly you may not get your email.
