After doing a dig, it seems that there is an MX record and that it
returns an A record but the A record contains no IP address. Is this
why a ping produces a host not found error?
That's entirely wrong. There is no MX record for the domain
"mailserver2.timestarz.com"
$ nslookup -q=mx mailserver2.timestarz.com
*** can't find mailserver2.timestarz.com: Non-existent host/domain
There's also no A record.
So, it looks like things are configured correctly....maybe I am just
handling it wrong?
I missed what the problem is. sendmail is saying it chooses not to handle
the mail. You can reconfigure sendmail not to check the sender domain (don't
ask me how - I abandoned sendmail for exim years ago)
