I would update to the newest version but we're running a cobalt Qube 3 pro
and we're not sure what dist we have installed.

A run of "fetchmail --nosyslog --nodetach -v -v -v" showing a run that
produces the error?
It's most likely a problem with the POP3 server, which is going to be
beyond fetchmail's ability to resolve. Knowing details of the server
software would help.
