MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY, U.S.A., 1991 OCT 10 (NB) -- Bellcore
said it has invented a new computer software technology that
offers a practical way to send a computer program to virtually
unlimited numbers of recipients -- even if they have incompatible
computer systems.
The new language, called Atomicmail, can be used to write
computer programs that are automatically distributed from one
computer to any other computer as electronic mail messages Users
of these programs can then communicate even if they have
different systems.
According to inventor Nathaniel Borenstein, the Atomicmail
language contains a built-in interactive communications
technology known as active messaging -- a message that seeks a
response from its users. As a result, Atomicmail "can be used to
create a wide variety of innovative programs useful for
information sharing and distributed cooperative work among
researchers or businesses," said Borenstein in a press statement.
For example, companies could use the Atomicmail language to
construct interactive programs that not only inform their
customers throughout the country about existing or new products,
but also include built-in return mechanisms whereby users can
immediately provide responses or place orders.
Historically, sending any program indiscriminately -- even within
a local area network -- could result in deleting critical files,
increasing opportunities for the spread of mail-based viruses, or
making a user's proprietary information public. A patent
application for the principles underlying the Atomicmail language
has been filed.
