The MTA has to check for its own IP addresses in the MX list. See
http://cr.yp.to/proto/mailloops.txt.
A better reference is RFC2821, which obsoletes RFC974, the original MX
specification.
In particular, RFC974 only ever said that a host evaluating MX records
should remove MX records that match its own name (and all others of
equal or greater preference). RFC2821 adds the requirement of checking
for your own address.
