Question about bangs (exclamation marks) in local-parts of addresses: My reading of the expansion of local-part to dot-atom to atext is that a bang is (1) permitted in the local-part of the address and (2) may appear _anywhere_ in the local-part.

Specifically, constructions such as <!bob(_at_)domain(_dot_)com> and <bob!(_at_)domain(_dot_)com> are permitted, even though they technically violate parsing rules for bang addresses.

Correct?

The bang is legal in the left-hand side (mailbox) of an Internet email address. From the perspective of Internet standards, the mailbox string is uninterpreted.

From the standpoint of an MTA's implementation, precedence between bang at at-sign depend upon the needs of the organization that is running the MTA. There are times when either precedence makes sense.

Such considerations are entirely outside the purview of the IETF.
