They are commercial reasons.  In exchange for a free account, Hotmail wants 
some branding.  But they are willing to let you get replies to a different 
account.

        well, hotmail does seem fundamentally broken to me, in several ways,
        so I guess my initial assessment is confirmed.
        
        what are the "basically understandable reasons" for hotmail not allowing
        From to be set?
