Re: [Asrg] May I summarize this conversation, please? Rev "A"

I'd like to take a moment and review [...]

This is mostly a very good summary. As probably one of the more
opinionated of the discussants (disputants?), for well over 100 lines I
see nothing I disagree with. Then at the very end....

The system must be "open" in the sense that it is unencombered by
patents or copyrights (the GPL or the BSD license is acceptable).

Enh.  Speak for yourself.  For me, the system must be unencumbered;
it's acceptable for an _implementation_ of it to be under the GPL or a
BSD copyright, or any other for that matter, but for the system itself
to be encumbered, even in such a way, is not. At least to me. (I
might be convinced to accept a three-clause BSD license, but even that
would take convincing. And I'm not sure the GPL as I've usually seen
it _could_ apply to the system itself, as opposed to an implementation
of it. Certainly the polemic at the beginning wouldn't apply.)
