This is different because the the format to support dates beyond 2050 is
already defined. The Y2K problem is a problem because a format to handle
the upcoming century was not agreed to by everyone well in advance.

Sure, but a lot of people thought that they didn't have to worry about
the year 2000 because it was 25 years away. Why set deadlines sooner than
they really need to be?
