I-D ACTION:draft-siemborski-rfc2554bis-02.txt (fwd)

2003-12-05 13:50:09
Hi,

This is the most recent version of a revsion I've been working on to
RFC2554. This came out of some discussions I had with others about
problems in the current spec (mostly based around lack of clarity on
the handling of the MAIL FROM AUTH= parameter and the initial client
response).

I'd like to hear some comments on it from a wider audience.

The most controversial issue I've hit so far is the choice of a
mandatory-to-implement (at a minimum level) SASL mechanism. From the
people I've talked to, it seems that the choice of DIGEST-MD5 is more
popular than the choice (that IMAP made) of STARTTLS+PLAIN, so that's
where the document currently stands.

Please send comments to the list.

-Rob

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : SMTP Service Extension for Authentication
        Author(s) : R. Siemborski
        Filename : draft-siemborski-rfc2554bis-02.txt
        Pages : 18
        Date : 2003-12-5

This document defines a Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP)
extension whereby an SMTP client may indicate an authentication
mechanism to the server, perform an authentication protocol
exchange, and optionally negotiate a security layer for subsequent
protocol interactions during this session. This extension includes
a profile of the Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL) for
SMTP.

This document obsoletes RFC 2554 and replaces it as a Proposed
Standard.

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
        "get draft-siemborski-rfc2554bis-02.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in

or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
        mailserv(_at_)ietf(_dot_)org(_dot_)
In the body type:
        "FILE /internet-drafts/draft-siemborski-rfc2554bis-02.txt".

NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
        how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.
