If you designed an open-ended protocol, you're far less likely to ever have to rewrite it. You just have to redeploy new implementations when you add new features. "Open-ended" isn't helping us in extending DHCP. That's not to say a practical, extensible, open-ended protocol can't be written... - Ralph
