Layer 3 Security for ISP applications

2000-07-15 22:30:05
Sorry, the last email had no subject field ...

Greetings,

Please let me know if this question is not suitable for this forum, and if
so, can you point me where to try.

I'm conducting a research which refers to new ISP infrastructures.
ISP's today start offering new layer 2 access to the home (Ethernet, Cable).

What is recommended for implementing security over these undedicated
connections?

I guess Authentication and security must go up to layer 3 ... which means
all applications
must use at least Layer 3 aware routing switches.

Is there a way to establish PPP Authentication over these layer 2
infrastructure?
(Resembling the common ISP application with dial up access servers)

Thanks in advance,
Moshe
