Are you aware of SPF (http://spf.pobox.com)? It addresses your first
two wishlist items and exists on top of SMTP.
I've looked at it briefly. But, it's not used yet (widely anyway), and
there's nothing forcing people to use it - so it's not much use at the moment.
I suppose it just becomes another reason not to have 'mail-ng', but just an
'SMTPV2' ;-)
If something like SPF was a mandatory part of SMTPV2 (along with 8 bit data
transfer, user authentication, etc) then I think there'd be much less
requirement to have a totally new protocol
