Follow-up Comment #1:

[Limitation]
This looks like a limitation.  To keep things simple, address
detection is media-type neutral.  I'm not sure having media-type
awareness is worth the effort and may complicate how related
resources are used.

An possible work-around is to set ADDRESSMODIFYCODE to check
for cid:, and if present, leave the address unchanged.  Using
Perl's regex 'x' modifer allows you to use full expressions
in the substitute portion of the s/// operator when checking for
cid:.  Send a follow-up if you need help in coming up with
a workable expression.
