I believe perl 5.002 may be buggy under NextStep.  Someone on
this list more familiar with the perl ports may provide some
insight.  You may want to see if a later version of Perl is
available.  Otherwise, you may have to debug the code yourself
since things work okay on my system and I do not have access
to a NextStep system.
