Non-procmail method of filtering email and bypassing /var/mail/<user> st

Hello,
I've read the posts about using procmail's "recipe" method to sort emails into 
MHonArc archives.  Is there another method I can use if procmail isn't 
available on my server?  

I currently use the .forward file to process my emails and am also wondering 
if there is a way to bypass storing emails in /var/mail/<user> and processing 
directly into MHonArc.
