Reasonable new program?

I was writing some shell scripts and I decided that mh needed its own
getopt.

basically the idea would be some sort of syntax like

mhgetopt directory: name: format: noname noformat -- -dir foo -na bar

which would utter on stdout:

-directory foo -name bar

Should I change the syntax or send in the code or what?
