Re: [Nmh-workers] amusing bug in "folder"

2011-02-16 22:31:53
I found out about the free, invisible "/" when writing a shell
Script that was going to archive a bunch of stuff. Luckily I test
Such thing very very carefully and I found it veering off into
Hyperspace before I uncommented the line that did the archiving.
I would have been very cross indeed if it had started vacuuming up
Entire other filesystems that it visited.

I'd go so far as claim that any behavior which leads MH out of your
MH or $HOME trees without direct, positive indication of intent
Is just wrongheaded behavior.

He has effectively typed "folder -recurse" already, the only differnce
is the implicit /, which is non-intuitive, but I imagine meant to
allow root to read his mail on machines where his home is /

well, sure. i'm not talking about correctness. i'm thinking that the
likelihood of someone typing "folders +" by mistake is much higher than
of typing "folders +" on purpose, and that in that less likely case the
user whose inbox directory is /inbox rather than /Mail/inbox or elsewhere
should be retrained to type "folders +/". thus my mention of least
astonishment.
