I repeat that I do not remember thinking about or discussing the
representation of messages, prior to say 1990 or even later.
But that was probably because it seemed so obvious. AND very early (in the
very earliest days almost all users were either programmers or secretaries),
programmers often used grep instead of pick. Either because pick was not yet
very powerful or just because they were more familiar with the syntax of grep
than the syntax of pick.
