I think I see what that's doing.
Here's a shorter equivalent, hopefully.  :-)

    #! /usr/local/bin/dash

    test $# -eq 0 && set cur

    case "$(folder -fast)" in
        lists|obsd|nmh) g=-group;;
        *) g=;;
    esac

    exec /usr/local/bin/repl $g "$@"
