I think you've got the solution right here.  Maybe use "show -nocheckmime"?

In a perfect world, there would be no "mhshow", just "show"; mhshow is
really a stopgap because there wasn't any integrated MIME support, but
like you said, most messages today have some form of MIME encoding.
