new release?

Thoughts on a new release?

It's been over 4 years since 1.7.1 was released, so I think it's about
time.  The notable changes since then are in docs/pending-release-notes,
or if you prefer:

Does anyone have any wishes, or enhancements they're working on?

I closed a few bugs recently, but don't have the time to handle any more.
