Ned, thank you for the further elaboration. My architectural bogon detector is jingling, however, on the basis that had we started with MIME as the base (rather than its predecessor RFC822), surely we would have come up with a Privacy-enhanced MIME (PEMIME?) which did not have the odd multiple/mutual encapsulation phenomenon. If my premise is correct, this suggests there exists a privacy enhanced MIME design which satisfies the various requirements without the funny capsulation. Vint
