You're quite right in that 'architecture' is a badly
abused term.  Most egregious when used in the plural.

THE best definition is in the IEEE Dictionary (ANSI/IEEE
Std 100).  Runs roughly: system architecture defines "the
structure and relationship among the components of a system."
