Re: what do we decide, like the WG meeting?

1994-12-16 14:04:00

Let us put a violent motion to the floor, and guage the discontent. We
might as well get this out of the way.

Does anyone feel that dropping the original RFC 1421-concept totally would
affect their vital interests, financial future, projects, deployed
implementations, egos, etc?

Would this step quickly bring about a dramatic increase in the number
of PEMed messages flying around by leaving only MIME-PEM concept in
the field of issue, regardless of its ambiguous operational qualities,
which might be worked on?

Hmmh. Provocative question, indeed. One problem, I'm afraid, is that some of
the commercial product developers, and more importantly, some of the marketing
people, may not be on this list and would not be adequately represented.

I'm aware of several commercial implementations that may be about to appear,
and I would hate to jerk the rug out from under them. In that sense, I'm
disappointed that TIS has decided to abandon support for the ARPA-funded
reference implementation of RFC-1421, as it will limit the amount of
interoperability testing that can be done.

We've made substantial progress by reinvigorating the discussion, but so far I
don't feel that I understand all of the architectural and infrastructure
support issues sufficiently well to changes horses yet.
