Re: X.500 discussion, FYI
(" The Government Information Locator Service (GILS) is a Federal
initiative to enable users to identify, locate, and access or acquire
publicly available Federal information resources, including electronic
information resources. GILS uses ANSI/NISO Z39.50, the American
National Standard for information retrieval, and other relevant standards
to support the deployment of Federal agency-based, Internet-accessible
locators. These locators provide users with descriptive, location, and
access information for a wide range of Federal government information
  resources." from http://info.er.usgs.gov/public/gils/intro.html)

Subject: GILS/X.500 Gateway

The U.S. Federal government is creating a government-wide X.500 directory.
It is also required that the information in this resource be accessible as a
GILS-compliant server on the Internet.

I'd be interested in comments from anyone who can shed light on technologies
for establishing such a gateway.
