Here's the general information for the list you've
subscribed to, in case you don't already have it:

[Last updated on: Tue Feb 13 11:48:48 1996]

The PEM-DEV mailing list is for discussions related to the development and
deployment of Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM), and now encompasses its
successor, MIME Object Security Services (MOSS).

                       WHAT ARE PEM AND MOSS?

Both are protocols for adding security mechanisms (digital signature
and encryption) to electronic mail. PEM is purely text-based, while
MOSS works in the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME)
environment and can handle multi-media mail.

PEM, which is a Proposed Internet Standard, is defined in a series of
four documents:

RFC 1421: Privacy Enhancement for Internet Electronic Mail:
Part I: Message Encryption and Authentication Procedures

RFC 1422: Privacy Enhancement for Internet Electronic Mail:
             Part II: Certificate-Based Key Management

RFC 1423: Privacy Enhancement for Internet Electronic Mail:
Part III: Algorithms, Modes, and Identifiers

RFC 1424: Privacy Enhancement for Internet Electronic Mail:
Part IV: Key Certification and Related Services

MOSS depends on the addition of security multiparts to MIME, which are
defined in the following document, which is a Proposed Internet
Standard:

RFC 1847: Security Multiparts for MIME:
             Multipart/Signed and Multipart/Encrypted

MOSS, which is a Proposed Internet Standard, is defined by one
document:

RFC 1848: MIME Object Security Services

All of the above RFCs are available in the PEM-DEV archives.

WHAT IS THE PEM-DEV MAILING LIST?

The PEM-DEV mailing list is intended to cover a wide range of
discussion including:

o General discussion among the members of the Internet Engineering
Task Force (IETF) PEM Working Group (now officially disbanded).

o Issues related to protocol extensions and message processing
procedures and key management architecture and infrastructure.

o Issues related to the development and deployment of PEM and MOSS
systems, including technical issues, development status,
   availability, etc.

This list is managed by majordomo. For more information send an email
message to "majordomo(_at_)neptune(_dot_)tis(_dot_)com" with "help" in the body
of the
message.

HOW CAN I ACCESS THE PEM-DEV ARCHIVES?

The PEM-DEV archives are available via majordomo as well anonymous ftp
from ftp.tis.com in the /pub/PEM-DEV/archives directory. Compressed
archive files, indicated with a ".Z" suffix, must be retrieved via
anonymous ftp. If you don't have ftp access please find a friend who
does. Please see the file /pub/PEM-DEV/README for details.
