Yes redhat 9. Hmm, OK; so now I did a google for "redhat 9 perl
unicode" and only found one hit which didn't identify the problem but
gave instructions for building openSSL on redhat 9 because there was
some redhat 9 brokenness.

The short answer: do

        export LC_ALL=C

On

      https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/rh9-errata.html

there is no mention of a perl rpm bug fix being available.

I did find this in their bug database, so it may be they haven't
figured out the reason all their scripts are blowing up is because
they've broken unicode support.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=87682

they have a work around of changing the LANG string to remove the UTF8
from it which I guess is the default on redhat 9.

Do you know if that is a work around or a fix.

(I added some comments to their bug entry).

So if you do "man perlunicode" it says your pre 5.6 scripts should
basically work as is.

However I'm finding in practice the simplest concievable example
doesn't work, viz:

% perl -e 'use bytes; print chr(255)' | od -tx1
0000000 c3 bf

Let me guess: you are using RedHat?
