using fgrep in a recipe

* $? fgrep -si -f $BOUNCE_LIST


I saw the line above in a recent email.

What does the $? mean?

I want to be able to  pipe to a script all emails with subjects 
that match one of the lines in a subject_file.

How would I do that?
