Anonymous e-mail id issues

1997-03-30 21:51:15

Hi folks,

Thinking of using procmail to create a whole bunch of anonymous
e-mail ids for a virtual domain - vU1, vU2 etc (short for virtual
User n). These users have real Internal ids rI1, rI2 etc. The
external Public (eP1, eP2 etc) has visibility to vU1, vU2 only.

So an e-mail from eP1 to vU1 has to be forwarded to rI1. When
rI1 replies, it should go to vU1, all headers get replaced and
the message goes to eP1 (internal users can see who is mailing
them, but the external users see only the anonymous ids).

1) Is there a package, which I can pipe e-mail through which
will do the trick (do not have root access to system).

2) If this has to be written, will the following strategy work?
   a) When vU1 gets the message, add X-Spl-Hdr with From value.
   b) Set Return-To to vU1, and also From to vU1
   c) Forward message to rI1, with all headers
   d) On the return trip (reply), save X-Spl-Hdr value
   e) Dump all headers, and generate To from X-Spl-Hdr
   f) Set From value to vU1
   g) Forward the message to eP1.

Hopefully, there is package so that number 2 option is just an
academic exercise :-) As long as none of the internal users
generate an automatic acknowledgement, is there any reason to
worry about mail storms? (a simple X-Loop will not do the trick).

Any suggestions?
