With a .forward file containing only the above line in place,
I'm not really sure what happens. The result is that no mail
is delivered. Can anyone suggest what might be the problem; or,
alternatively, how I might find out what the problem is? Thanks
for any input.

Put it in place, then have someone else send you email, then once they
receive the bounce message, remove it and examine the bounce message.

If the bounce message contains the phrase "cannot use & in command", then
your system has smrsh (the SendMail Restricted SHell) installed, and your
.forward file can be shortened to:

        "|procmail -f-"

If you then get the message "procmail not availible for sendmail programs",
then procmail needs to be installed in the sm.bin directory used by smrsh:
talk to your sysadmin, as he or she will be only one who can help you.

Otherwise, just examine the bounce message and go from there.
