lockfile

Is there a way to change where the lock file goes.  Im getting an
error in creating the Lockfile in the log.  I cannot get write
access to the usr/spool/mail directory so is there a way to change
it ... I tried

LOCKFILE=$home/.lockfile but all it did was dump my mail into the
holding bin.  I just got rid of the line and my mail is now
flowing like crazy.
