query: threading replies

Suppose procmail receives a message, with "References" (or
maybe just "Subject") headers indicating it belongs in a
thread with some previously filed messages.  How can I
arrange to deliver the new message to the same folder as
its reference?

That is, I would like to gather threads.  I expect an
efficient solution would involve an external hashing
utility (hashing key strings to folder strings).
