their own autoresponders. I had originally set up .forward and
.procmailrc as needed to run an autoresponder on my own domain, and it
ran fine. But we provide virtual domains (http aliasing) for our
hosting customers and all their mail functions are controlled through my
account, so I don't have a different .forward and .procmailrc for each
individual domain, just my own. I tried modifying each to include the
additional domain name and response file, but it doesn't work. What
happens is the AR address receives the request but the sending address
never receives a response.

I'm confused... When you say that their mail functions are controlled
through your account, do you mean your domain, or an actual account?

The best thing to do is upgrade to sendmail 8.9.1a and do the virtual
hosting stuff (built right in). There's a way around it (sort of)
with procmail, but it's ugly and won't work in some cases (i.e. bcc).
It's in this list's archives at

   http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/procmail/1998-04/msg00289.html

But seriously -- upgrade to sendmail 8.9.1a and do the virtual host thing
there. Or use exim.
